Stay Safe, Stay Smart: Protect Yourself from Scams and Fraud

As digital banking and money transfer apps become more common, so do scams that target everyday people. At Cotton Belt Federal Credit Union, we are committed to helping our members across Arkansas spot fraud early and avoid common traps. Fraud is becoming more sophisticated, but most scams rely on the same tricks — creating urgency and asking for personal information. Here are some of the most common scams we are seeing and how to protect yourself.

Common scams we are seeing right now
  1. Payment App Scams
Apps like Cash App, Venmo, and Zelle make sending money easy, but scammers take advantage of that convenience. They may claim they “sent you money by mistake,” ask you to “verify your account,” or say your account has been locked. These are all red flags. Once you send money to a stranger, it is almost impossible to get it back. Only send money to people you personally know and trust.
  2. Fake Text Messages
Scammers often send texts pretending to be from your bank, credit union, or a delivery service. They might say your account is locked or a package cannot be delivered, followed by a link that leads to a fake website. Remember: Cotton Belt will never text you asking for your login, account number, or verification code.
  3. Spoofed Phone Calls
Fraudsters can manipulate caller ID so it looks like a call is coming from Cotton Belt. They might say there is “suspicious activity” on your account and ask for your PIN or password. Hang up immediately and call us back at the number listed on our website or the back of your debit card.
What to do if something feels off

Pause before you click, reply, or send money. Scammers count on people reacting quickly. If something feels rushed or urgent, it’s probably a scam.

If something seems suspicious:

  • Do not share passwords, PINs, or one-time codes.
  • Do not click links in unexpected texts or emails.
  • Do not feel pressured by urgent language.
  • Call Cotton Belt directly, even if the message appears legitimate.

If you think you have been targeted, block the number, delete the message, and contact us right away. Our team can help review your account and ensure your information stays secure.

Everyday ways to protect your money

Once you know what to watch for, there are also a few easy habits that can help you stay protected every day:

  • Use strong, unique passwords and change them regularly.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for mobile and online banking.
  • Avoid public Wi-Fi when accessing financial accounts.
  • Check your accounts often and report any suspicious activity right away.
  • Be cautious with payment apps and only send money to people you personally know.
  • Never pay anyone in gift cards or digital currency for “verification” or “refund” purposes.
A real-world example: Fake Cash App Support

You get a text or message that looks like it’s from Cash App. It says your account has been locked or a payment can’t be received until you verify your information. The message includes a link or a phone number for support.

When you call or click, a “representative” answers and asks for your login credentials, debit card number, or a one-time code to “restore your account.” It sounds legitimate, but it’s a scam.

Cash App does not have live phone support, and no real representative will ever ask for your PIN, password, or verification code.

Pro tip: Always go directly through the Cash App app or website for support. If something feels off, call Cotton Belt before you respond. We can help you confirm what is legitimate and what is not.
